Erin Matthews, LCSW

Founder of Living in Empathy Institute

Erin Matthews, a contagiously warm Black therapist and seasoned coach, has spent the last 15 years leading others to realize their own potential. She is the co-founder of Living in Empathy Collective.

Using a trauma-informed and evidence based practice lens, Erin works passionately to expand and share knowledge, to empower, and heal, all the while helping clients consciously create the best version of themselves. Realizing how oppression and identity impact clients has been a crucial part of her work in helping clients move forward and feel high levels of self-worth.

Her modern approach to one-on-one work, groups, and corporate training teach empathy for self and others through personal narratives and critical discourse. Working with white people who are unfamiliar with interacting with oppressed or marginalized populations has become an integral part of her work in both educating and promoting the improvement of racial relations.

Erin is is an advisor on Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Connection Team Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Board and does DEI and mental health consulting for Northwestern University's Center for Food Allergy & Asthma Research.

Self-care is how to take your power back.

I’m here to help you activate it.

Is the person in the mirror becoming a stranger?

It is normal for work, finances, relationships, love, friendships, family, loss, and/or health to generate intense feelings of emotional distress. The person we see in the mirror becomes a stranger.

You are not alone. You are not going crazy.

My motto is this: I will meet you where you are and take you where you want to be.

There is hope. Getting out of bed can feel good again. I know personally how it feels to struggle with anxiety and insecurity.

While psychotherapy and coaching are not easy, it can be highly beneficial for most people.

My clients report consistently positive outcomes like a greater sense of well-being, improved mood, increased self-worth, enhanced communication ability, coping skills, satisfaction in relationships, and deepened personal insight.

My style is open, affirming and empowering.

When we need to look at something painful, I strive to do so with empathy and courage. I utilize a strength based approach to find solutions rather than problems. I coach with compassion to empower clients to open their minds to new possibilities.
