Living in Empathy Institute
It’s an invitation to a deeper life shift in action. To Become a TRUE White Ally
Our research-validated compassion-based groups open your heart, mind, and eyes and allow you to begin to take meaningful action in every way you can to be a part of this collective revolution.
Well-meaning white people have long been the missing link in the work we need to do to eradicate racism. But until now many have struggled with where to begin.
And whether you are addressing this personally, professionally or in an academic setting, we offer groups and private consulting tailored to meet your specific needs.
Our compassion-based racism-dismantling workshops are designed to guide participants through the process of identifying and handling unconscious bias that we are all universally affected by, so they can examine, consider and handle the emotions that arise in the process, and decide what actions to take in their lives as a result.
You hold within you the power to be an ally, to create opportunities for allyship in your workplace and academic institutions that benefit everyone. No matter who you are, you belong in this work to elevate and support the voices of People of Color and to join us on the road to a truly equal and just society.
“This is the training every individual, workplace and classroom needs to change the world.”

“Living in Empathy provided me with a safe space to talk about my privilege, my role in maintaining systems that benefit me and harm others, and how I can take an active role in dismantling the problem. I’m grateful for Erin’s openness, honestly, and ability to keep it real while discussing such challenging topics. There is a culture of learning and doing better, without the pressure to be perfect or the fear of getting it wrong. This course has helped me maintain my dedication to anti-racism and allowed me to continue doing the necessary work.”

"I've been passionate about this work for a while, but have had challenges focusing towards productive action. This group helped me to be more disciplined about my approach, and hearing the wide variety of micro and macro actions others were taking was incredibly inspiring and valuable. This intimate group setting also allowed me to see how the work is constant and reminds me that everyone is coming from very different life experiences and perspectives. I also have noticed I communicate so much better with folks- friends & family, as well as folks in social media discussion, because I have a broader knowledge and understanding while also coming from a place of compassion and empathy. Transmuting some of that rage and frustration into action & empathy has changed my tone and invited much more civil and productive discourse- Erin models this consistently, and that has been the most valuable piece for me. I love you both SO MUCH and hope you are enjoying your new groups!!"

"Erin has created a welcoming and even loving space in which to deepen understanding of racial injustice and how to take action as allies. I am grateful for their guidance not only in furthering my commitment and clarifying my path in support of equity, but also in recognizing the necessity of self-care as we do this very challenging work together."

"I honestly don’t know how to express the impact Erin's Living in Empathy course has had on me, as nothing I put into words will adequately describe the transformation I’ve experienced. I’ve always viewed myself as an empathetic, progressive person that understands the importance of social justice. But what I didn’t understand was my role - that being “not racist” doesn’t absolve me from stepping up and doing my part to actually rectify the problem! Quite the opposite actually, because if we as white people understand the depths of systemic racism in our country and don’t also understand that we have a responsibility to stop “accepting” privilege at the expense of others, then shame on us!!"

“This course transformed my thinking to better understand what racism is and what role I can play in improving the situation. I used to think racism was simply an opinion or prejudice towards other individuals. Erin created an engaging and safe platform for our small group to learn and discuss what was on our minds each week. Right away, with their guidance, we all had action goals so we could start making changes. This course was inspiring!”

"I participated in the Living In Empathy Group after sitting with the discomfort of having a bit of a realisation that I was part of the problem. I don't think this was a bad thing to realise, as in really acknowledging my privilege and the inherently racist system in which I am a part, I feel the deep discomfort that leads to action. I guess the trouble was, I didn't know how to act! I was worried whatever I did would be unhelpful or insensitive. The Living in Empathy Group offered me a safe place to unpack this and to gain an understanding of effective micro and macro actions I could take to really take action to live my values of equality and justice.
Erin is warm, grounded, and a wise woman who show up full heart and hold space in a way that is beyond what I could have expected. Her sharings of personal truth hit hard and allow a deeper integration of understanding the history that I so do not want to be our future. So, if you too are uncomfortable and unsure of how to support change in a more sensitive and informed manner, I cannot recommend this group enough. Being based in Australia I found it equally as relevant here - though my action focus might have been different than my peers."

"The Living in Empathy courses I took with Erin allowed me to deepen my understanding of racism and my role in perpetuating white supremacy. But rather than filling me with a sense of guilt or hopelessness, their empathetic, yet direct approach allowed me to explore and process my feelings and experiences with self-care, and thus provided me with a roadmap to move forward as an antiracist knowing my ongoing acts, small or large, along with lifelong learning are enough to be an ally. I would highly recommend this course.”
